RHA's Nominating Committee

The Nominating Committee is a key Committee that ensures a strong and diverse Board of Directors and Officers of the Association, this policy outlines expectations and responsibilities of the committee.

Policy Statement:

The following are the core objectives of the RHA Nominating Committee:

  • Identify, recruit, and nominate the highest-quality nominees for the Board of Director positions
  • Advance the core mission, values and bylaws of RHA
  • Trust and respect all members of RHA
  • Pursue diversity in geography, culture, skills, experience, and perspectives from across the rental housing industry;
  • Act with fairness and integrity, by providing transparency of objectives, criteria, procedures, and mechanisms for receiving input, while respecting candidates’ privacy and maintaining the confidentiality that is necessary to assure open and frank communications within RHA.  
  • The Committee is responsible for the selection of Board of Directors. Committee members are expected to engage in outreach, recruitment, and information gathering; to read the submitted and gathered information about each candidate under consideration; to participate in both deliberations about individual candidates and construction of slates of candidates that will fulfill the requirements for Board of Director; to participate in Committee teleconferences; to work diligently with colleagues toward an overall consensus on the best possible group of candidates to be selected.

Committee’s Role:

The Committee’s role is to select individuals of the highest integrity and capability who place the broad public interest of the rental housing industry ahead of any particular interests, and who are knowledgeable about RHA’s mission and environment.

The Committee functions independently from the RHA Board. RHA By-laws describe the make up of the Committee.  Bylaws section 5.03 Nominating Committee. Ninety (90) days prior to the Annual membership meeting, the Chair shall appoint, with majority approval of the Board, a Nominating Committee composed of at least three (3) Directors (to include, if possible, at least one past Chair of the Association, one director in their first term and one director that is not a member of the Executive Committee) and all Standing Committee chairs for the purpose of selecting qualified candidates for the Board of Directors.

Committee members are expected to strictly adhere to RHA’s Conflict of Interest Policy.  Committee members will not disclose outside of the Committee any of the discussions, deliberations, communications, records and notes, about the candidates. Further, Committee members will not disclose outside of the Committee the identities of the candidates under consideration, unless the Committee as a whole has decided to do so and the explicit consent of the candidate(s) in question has been obtained. 

RHA By-laws describes candidate’s eligibility factors.   Bylaws Section 5.04  Any person over the age of eighteen (18) who has been a Regular Member in good standing for a minimum of one (1) year preceding the balloting and resides and owns rental housing in Washington shall be eligible for election as a Director, provided that the Board has determined that he/she is the designated voting representative as required by section 4.04 and has served on a committee or otherwise actively participated in the activities of the association for a minimum period of six months prior to his/her election.

The recommended candidate is to be submitted to RHA in writing. The recommendation should include: name of candidate, address, phone, email address, written statement from the candidate indicating interest and resume.

The Committee will evaluate Candidates in a fair and consistent manner, considering the Statement of Interest, references and, as needed, interviews, consultations, and third-party information sources. 

Committee Time Table:

  • Announcement of Formal Call – June/July
  • Begin Candidate Evaluations – August
  • Face-to-Face Meeting (if needed) and Selection – September
  • Results Announced to Board of Directors – September/October
  • Election - Annual Meeting – October
     

Following the Election at the Annual Gathering in October, the Nominating Committee will convene to develop a slate of officers for the coming year.  The Nominating Committee when considering nominations for Board Officers will first poll all qualified Directors to determine interest in serving as an officer.  The final slate will be presented to the Board for election no later than the final scheduled Board meeting of the year.
